Tourism in Lot

On one side is the Massif Central, on the other Aquitaine. With our campsite in the Lot, discover the region between the two, also known as Quercy. Joyful like its rivers, secret like its causses, full of generous promise like its vineyards.

Between the valleys and the Causses

In the south of the département, the Lot has carved its capricious course through the great limestone plateau, meandering its way through the famous "loops" or "cingles" of the Lot. The valley is bordered by high cliffs, perched on the village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie. To the north, the Dordogne valley crosses the department for around fifty kilometres. This is the Valley of Wonders, with its proud castles, Castelnau-Bretenoux and Montal, and exceptional villages such as Carennac. Parallel to the course of the Lot, the Célé valley has nothing to envy them. This tributary of the Lot is also its replica in miniature: steep cliffs, charming villages and a major prehistoric site: the Pech-Merle cave.

The limestone plateaux, or causses, with their moorland and small oak forests, sprinkled with dry-stone buildings, are part of the Causses du Quercy Regional Nature Park. There are four of these in the département. The most northerly, the causse de Martel, is the least arid, reminiscent of its neighbour Corrèze; between the Dordogne and the Lot, the causse de Gramat is famous for its landmark sites, Rocamadour and the Padirac chasm; between the Célé and the Lot, its smaller equivalent, the causse de Cajarc, is also known as the causse de Gréalou; and on the other side of the high cliffs of the Lot, the causse de Limognes is the kingdom of truffles.
